The Mysterious World of the Mariana Trench

Deep beneath the surface of the Pacific Ocean lies a realm of darkness and mystery: the Mariana Trench. In 1960, a team of scientists led by Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh made the first manned descent to the bottom of the trench. They reached a depth of 10,911 meters (35,800 feet) in the submersible Trieste. The journey took about five hours and was fraught with danger. The crew had to withstand the intense pressure of the water, which was more than 1,000 times greater than the atmospheric pressure at sea level.
