The Surprising History of the Paperclip: From Humble Beginnings to Office Staple

The paperclip, a seemingly mundane object found in nearly every office and home, has a surprisingly fascinating history. The Gem clip, however, was initially called the “gem paper clip” and was not quite the same as the paper clip design we are familiar with today.

In 1901, a New Yorker named William Middlebrook designed a paperclip with a slightly different shape, which was slightly more efficient. Middlebrook’s design became the standard, and by the early 20th century, paperclips were commonplace in office supplies. This design is the paperclip we see today, and is sometimes called the "standard" or "regular" paperclip.

Beyond its practicality, the paperclip has also become a symbol of creativity and resourcefulness. During World War II, Allied prisoners of war in German camps used paperclips to send coded messages.
